Lots of liquor for Carolina Beach
I always knew that people on Pleasure Island liked to drink, but now I have have scientific evidence to back it up. The North Carolina Alchoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABC) will be doubling the size of its Carolina Beach store starting this month.
Don't worry, they won't be closing. They'll build the new store (6,100 sf) in the parking lot. When it's finished they'll demolish the old building (2,700 sf) and re-surface the parking lot. A nice by-product of this will be improved landscaping. As you may have noticed, the old store is pretty bland. The new one will have lots of palms, bushes and other nice green stuff. They hope to be all finished by the end of July, but you know how these things go. (Yes, the picture above is of th new building)
Speaking of the old building, did you know that it used to be a Wendy's? Before that it was a Tastee Freez. It's true. The ABC store moved into its present location in 1993. Before that, the ABC store was located where Majik Beanz is today. Where else can you find such important tidbits?
The Rumor Mill
Speaking of alchoholic beverages, I'm hearing that we might get a Brew Thru. How convenient, I could get my Yuengling without leaving the car.
The guns still roar 144 years later
I'm a history buff, so I have to tell you to visit Fort Fisher next Saturday (January 17) for their annual commemoration of the largest land and sea battle in the history of the world when it was fought in 1865.
This picture was taken at last year's reenactment by Michael Spence
The all-day event runs from 10am - 4pm. They'll have an artillery demonstration and so many other special programs that I can't list them all here. I've posted the day's events on our website for you to see.
The Riggings gets a repreive
The folks down at the Riggings condominiums won't go down without a fight. They continue to make the argument that they should be allowed to keep the sandbags that protect them. The other day a local judge agreed with them.
Comedy by the Beach will be returning to the Black Horn Bar & Kitchen on January 15th. The comedy review will feature Charlie Goodnights and Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club regulars Denis McDonough and Jim Bonawitz
The show, which starts at 10pm, is hosted by Super Cat Matt and will also feature a guest appearance by John "Lightning" McQueen who is busy owning Sandpiper Subs when he's not telling off-color jokes.
I over-estimated the Carolina Beach Furniture Sale
In the last E-news I told you about how Carolina Beach Furniture is having a year-end clearance sale. I mentined that everything is marked down 50%. That's not exactly true. They are having a clearance sale (some things will be marked down by as much as 75%), but not everything. My bad. Either way they have some screaming deals all January.
... The Lime & the Coconut is closing in mid-January (they plan to re-open this spring in another location) and the prices reflect a desire to shed inventory.
... The Unique Boutique is having a clearance sale in January. Stop in to find discounted prices on cool fashions.
... Island Kite & Surf is discounting their wetsuits by 20% and they also are having a sale on selected men's and women's winter fashions.
The Shuckin' Shack needs you
Matt Piccinnin needs your help. He's considering a new special, but he wants som feedback. What do you think?
