Bringing back the StriperI recently told you about an effort to revive the Flounder population. Now I'm going to tell you about an effort to restore another, more impressive fish - the Striper, or Striped Bass. They can grow to over 100lbs. (That's a big $#%@ fish!)Striped Bass are what you call an anadromous fish, meaning that they migrate from salt water to fresh water to breed. Back in 1915 when the lock and dams where built on the Cape Fear River, the local anadromous fish populations plummeted. (Shad, Herring, and Sturgeon also migrate up the Cape Fear). Now the Cape Fear River Watch wants to install fish ladders around the three lock & dams."We can achieve almost complete restoration of the Striper population with these rock weirs," said Riverkeeper Doug Springer. "The economic benefit to the Cape Fear region could be near $3 million per year."Some of the fish manage to get upstream through the locks, but very few. Allowing them to bypass the locks would do wonders for them. And when the little baby fish head back downstream, guess who's waiting for them? Hungry flounder, that's who. So this project would help the flounder as well.To read about the CFRW fish restoration project click here.To support this effort, they're sponsoring the first ever catch and release Striper Tournament on December 4-5. They (meaning the fish and Cape Fear River Watch) could really use your support.
Bodies are likely to be found under CB HomeIt turns out that the 67-year-old crime in Carolina Beach may be solved. Yesterday as I walked Buck the sheepdog we stumbled upon a television news crew interviewing the nephew of the woman who went missing in 1941. Sonar equipment found empty spaces in the ground below the house that they believe is where she was buried. They'll be digging soon to be certain, and they'll remove the bodies if they're found. If you're not familiar with this story, her family has suspected that she and her daughter were killed by her husband and buried under the brand-new concrete slab under their house. The Star-News wrote a nice article.Buck was on the job. He sniffed the cameraman and peed on a local bush. Well done Buck, you deserve a treat. The Last Resort changes handsCarla and Russell Haywood are saying goodbye to the Last Resort. Bob and Kim Lewis, with partner Nancy Reis, are taking over as of yesterday. Russell is looking forward to devoting his spare time to playing drums for the Deadnotes. When I stopped in yesterday I found Carla counting all the dollar bills with people's names written in them. (The dollar bills decorated the wall behind the bar.) I always wndered what happened to those. In this case, they'll be donated to charity. I knew there was something special about Carla and Russell. We'll miss them, but I know they won't be strangers.Bob, Kim and Nancy are all Carolina Beach locals and they don'r plan any major changes. They'll focus on bringing in good music and good friends just like always. This weekend they'll host a fundraiser/birthday party with the proceeds going to a breast cancer awareness program. They'll be serving seafood gumbo and other treats. They'll also continue to host the parade party that is so anticipated around town.
